About Fake, Counterfeit, Copy or Clone DVR Cards

UPDATE 11/15/2011 - To Present

Recently the Geovision corporation has introduced a new DVR Card to its product line. It is the GV-900 DVR Card which supports 8, 16 and 32 channels. This is interesting due to the fact that many years ago, Geovision used to offer an older version called the GV-900 then phased it out. Now since they have re-introduced the improved version many years later, there are currently no counterfeit versions on the market.

However, if you are approached by non-geovision overseas vendors telling you that they will sell you the, "GV-900" then you can be certian that it is not only a counterfeit, but it is the old, old version of the GV-900. They will tell you that it is the new GV-900 and they will likely show you pictures of the new authentic DVR Card that is taken from the GeoVision website, however it is false.

The counterfeit companies in China can still produce the old inferior GV-900's and they will attempt to sell it to you as the new release. Don't be fooled as this is not the case.

How Counterfeit DVR Cards happend in the older DVR Card versions...

An overseas factory ( usually in mainland China ) are allowed a budget to manufacture a certain amount of DVR Cards.

This factory is usually not owned by the company that is contracting the production. This is what's called as OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer. For example, some name brand Sony products are manufacturer by a OEM company by the name of Matsushita, Clark toys has their OEM production contracted to Xia Shennan and so forth.

Oftentimes the manager of the OEM factory will have what is called an "over production run".  This means that they will will intentionally produce more products than they supply to the contracted company. So for example if XYZ company pays $250,000 to have 14,000 dvr cards to be manufactured, the factory manager will actually have 16,000 units produced.

Almost always, the additional items that are "over produced" are manufactured from greatly inferior quality components to help increase the profits. Now, the over production run of the products are sold to various vendors which claim that they are identical products to the original. Also, the factory that is contracted to produce the originals will have another company copy the originals. We are not saying that this is the case with the Geovision products - we are just explaining how apart of the counterfeiting process works.

Why is this a problem????

These factories will produce a much older version of the DVR Card and then label it as a newer, more updated version. They will advertise it as the latest version of the hardware while it is actually 3 years old.

Also, the problem occurs due to a serious lack of quality on the fake cards - since they do not have the strict Quality Control - which is usually inspected by the contracting company, the quality is exceedingly poor.

The parties that are involved in the production of the fake cards are only interested in turning a profit. They do not care about selling the cards over an extended period of time, unlike the original company.

Also, Geovision is working very hard to implement anti-counterfeit measures in all versions of the software which will certainly sabotage the operation of the fake card.

Geovision is actively taking legal action against anyone that is buying and selling these cards. They have retained a very capable legal firm as well as a large budget to stop the fake cards from circulating.

Mainland Chinese DVR Card Companies that Lie

We see this all the time, and quite possibly you get emails advertising these counterfeit dvr cards. One thing to be aware of is that you will NEVER get contacted by the actual company that assembles these fake products. What you will get however, is a reseller. The reseller are usually young adults that are buying and reselling these items. This means that you will not get any kind of technical support on these products. We have setup meetings with manufacturers that, when we arrive in person, the company turns out to be 3 teenager working in an apartment building. Imagine that. You travel 1000's of miles only to discover that all of the countless email dialog is with some young kids in an apartment.

We Visit China to meet a Counterfeit DVR Card "Factory"

Every year we visit various companies throughout Mainland China. A couple of years ago we were contacted by a more popular counterfeit DVR Card company that wanted us to sell their fake Geovision and Avermedia dvr cards. Since we were going to be in this particular city, (Shenzhen to be exact) we decided to pay them a visit. This particular company that is listed all over the internet and is not a true manufacturer - instead, they are a reseller possibly selling out of their apartment somewhere.

You may know of this particular company in Shenzhen China, it is located off Binhe Road in the Futian District. On their website they have fancy pictures that display a very clean and sterile electronics assembly environment. They display workers in clean blue laboratory jackets wearing hair-nets to protect the production. We are here to tell you that this is a facade. This particular company is a reseller with no support base to offer. Since I take tons of pictures when I travel, I have some snapshots of the experience.

In Shenzhen near the LoWu station on our way to visit with a counterfeit dvr reseller.Going through the building to the elevator. The so-called dvr-card The elevator leading up to the fake dvr card manufacturer - obviously they are a reseller and no assembly is taking place above the market. The hallway to the And here is the dvr card "factory" according to the correct address. They did not show up for obvious reasons. Two older men playing Mahjong on a street bench on the way back from leaving the dingy building. (interesting picture anyways)
